Dear colleagues,

Herewith I am sending  the following information on your attention. This information is copied  from the website http://www.saveraptors.org/news.php?id=94

"24.06.2010 An Imperial Eagle of 40 days was kidnapped from its nest

A 40 days Imperial Eaglet was kidnapped Tuesday night from its nest in

Sakar. Crime was committed at night when the shift of the BSPB volunteer

was completed. Poachers have climbed with alpine equipment and took the

bird from the nest. The chick was completely defenceless as it couldn’t

fly yet.

In a hurry the kidnappers abandoned on the tree some of the climbing

equipments - ropes and other. On the place of the crime was tracked down

human and off-road vehicle traces. BSPB representatives immediately made

complaints to the local police in Topolovgrad and to the RIEW - Stara

Zagora. Police team made an inquest on the spot yesterday and started

investigation on the case.

"This is the second juvenile Imperial Eagle that has disappeared this

year," said Dimitar Dmerdzhiev from BSPB, a conservation officer for the

Imperial Eagle of the LIFE+ project „Save the Raptors”. "About 10 days

ago a juvenile eagle from a nest, guarded by our colleagues from “Green

Balkans”, disappeared and the reasons remained unclear," added Dimitar

Demerdzhiev. He explained that guards, organized by BSPB aims to limit

the human disturbance to endangered birds (agricultural activities, loud

noise, passage of people and machines near the nest) but can’t prevent

criminal acts.

"It is recalled that the plundering of nests by falconers is one of the

main causes of the tragic situation of the Saker Falcon population,

which is on the brink of extinction in Bulgaria," said Svetoslav

Spassov, project manager of the LIFE+ protect “Save the Raptors”.

Plundering of nests of wild birds is considered a crime under the Penal

Code of the Republic of Bulgaria. According to Article 27, paragraph 4

of the Penal Code "Who destroys, captures, holds or sell a

representative of European or globally endangered wild vertebrate animal

without the necessary permission for this, shall be punished by

imprisonment of up to 5 years and a fine of 1000 to 5000 Leva and offset

of the damages.

All day and night birds of prey are protected by the Bulgarian law and

the Imperial Eagle is a globally threatened species on top of that."

If you have some information related to this on the case, please contact

CITES MA. In meantime we will try to collect some samples of feathers if

we need to solve this case by means of the DNA analysis.

Best regards,

Valeri Georgiev
